Less than one month after losing the National Scrabble Championship to Abigail McDonald, Fred Collins rebounded to win the Fantasy Nails Lien Trophy championship when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players staged that tournament at the Maltenoes sports Club yesterday.
Collins won all six of his games and amassed a positive spread of 566 to, not only win the championships but also cart off the trophy by dint of completing his third victory in this championships.
Floyd Carmichael was his closest rival, winning four games with a positive spread of 386 while Rudolph Michael completed the podium positions, also winning four games but with a lower spread of 340. Two other players, Leon Belony and Moen Gafoor also won four games but had to be content with third and fourth places, by dint of lower spreads of 201 and 157, respectively.
Collins made his intentions known from the very first game when he blew away Julian Skeete by a spread of 75. He returned in the second game and edged James Krakowsky by a spread of 51 then closed off the pre-lunch session with a 106 spread drubbing over Michael Benjamin.
Leon Belony was his first victim after the lunch session. He lost by a spread of 109. Obviously regaining his old touch, Collins disposed of Moen Gafoor (173) shortly before squaring off with R.O. Michael. The two engaged in a ding-dong battle for supremacy and as the game whittled down, the game swayed from one contestant to the other. The wily Collins was eventually able to seize the initiative and squeezed home by the slimmest of margins (1).
Abigail McDonald, apparently still basking in the throes of ecstasy after her scintillating 3-2 victory over Collins in the just concluded National Championships, chose to sit out the tournament, dampening the highly anticipated return with Collins.
The players next convene for the Earl Vigilance Memorial championships slated for the LEAP Building, Linden on Sunday, June 28. Vigilance, a competent player, died about 3 years ago after he was involved in an industrial accident in the Mining Town.
