A South Ruimveldt resident is nursing a glancing gunshot wound to the upper part of his body following an attack on a shop at Mandela Avenue and Joseph Pollydore Street, Lodge, by three gunmen early yesterday morning.
A suspect was taken into custody yesterday afternoon.
According to the police, the gunmen entered the business place where the men were said to be gambling at 01:30 hours. They ordered the occupants to lie flat but Joseph Lewis, one of the victims, reportedly resisted their demand and was shot.
The police also said that the gunmen did not target the business place except to remove a quantity of phone cards.
Kaieteur News understands that it is customary for the shopkeeper to sell persons with whom he is familiar, even when the facility is closed.
According to reports, one of the bandits called out to the shopkeeper requesting to make a purchase.
The shopkeeper enquired who it was but did not recognize the person from the name given by one of the gunmen.
He told the bandit that he did not know anyone by that name and within minutes the door of the shop was kicked open and three men with guns entered.
They proceeded to rob the persons in the shop.
According to a source, the gunmen demanded jewellery from Lewis and when he said that he did not have any, he was shot.
After the bandits fled, Lewis was rushed to the hospital where he was immediately admitted.
