Amidst promises of a $325,000 packaging vacuum from the Agriculture Ministry, another all natural organically produced product was launched yesterday to add to the local coffee variety available on market shelves.
The new variety of locally grown coffee, produced by the Blue Flame women’s group, was launched by North West Organics (NWO) as a continuance of its development and marketing of Guyanese organic food products at the Cara Lodge. The product will be available on the shelves of Bounty’s Kitty outlet, along with Nigel’s and Bonny’s supermarkets.
Annette Arjoon, Project Coordinator of the Guyana Marine Turtle Conservation Society, under which the project falls, said based on limited consumer testing, the coffee has a distinctive flavour that is probably attributable to the fertile lateritic soil and environmental conditions of region one.
Grown by small farmers in the Hosororo and Bumbury communities in the North West, the raw beans are purchased by the Blue Flame Women’s Group and then packaged and distributed by the NWO
Arjoon, who is founder of NWO, said that this new product is in keeping with today’s demand for organically-produced foods, and more particularly, dovetails with President Jagdeo’s low carbon development strategy.
The production processes involved are carbon neutral and are contributing to income generation in impoverished communities. Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud, who has sampled the product, has committed his Ministry’s support to this initiative in the form of vacuum packaging equipment which will ensure flavour retention and longer shelf life.
