Fresh from a scintillating performance that netted her the National Scrabble Championship, Abigail McDonald returns on Sunday to contest the Fantasy Lien Scrabble Championship, slated for Malteenoes Cricket Club, Thomas lands, starting 10:00hrs.
It is not yet clear whether Fred Collins would be contesting the tournament, but several other top seeds are aiming to etch their names on the trophy. McDonald is on a high after taking on a star-studded field that included Moen Gafoor, Orlando Michael, James Krakowsky and Colin Chichester among others to eventually emerge victorious after a thrilling, best of five, encounter with Collins in the final of the just concluded Nationals.
The new champ is very upbeat and would be hoping to take the ripping form from the National Championship into this weekend’s tournament. She would still have to be wary of top seeds, Gafoor and Krakowsky, two players that could disrupt her winning streak.
During the just concluded tournament, also, Anand Mohabir, eventually adjudged the Best Newcomer, would be aiming to continue where he left off. He had scored victories over Colin Chichester, James Krakowsky and Orlando Michael among others at the recent nationals. The wins have set tongues wagging and he has been labeled as someone to watch.
Meanwhile, following the attainment of the National title by a female, the executive of the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) has issued a call for wider participation of females in the sport. A senior member of the executive has also disclosed that plans are now in train to initiate a schools tournament in an effort to broaden the level of awareness.
A source close to the executive body intimated that they have already initiated discussions with the administration of Central High School, one of the six pilot schools identified for the inaugural schools tournament.
The source also said that the GASP had attempted to implement this ploy a few years ago, but several challenges had forced the executive to abort the project. However, with the renewed interest generated by McDonald’s feat, the executive is once again prepared to give the project a try.
The players contesting this weekend’s tournament would be vying for several lucrative prizes donated by corporate Guyana.
