Fruta Conqueror’s, on the back of a 51st minute goal off the boot of Manasseh Primo sent the Guyana Defence Force packing, while Sunburst Camptown defeated BK Western Tigers 3-1, on penalty kicks, to set up an intriguing final between the two winners tonight, when the Camptown Football Club Fund Raising Festival concludes at their Campbellville Housing Scheme ground, tonight.
The GDF seemed not to have recovered from the 2-0 loss to the lowly rated Cougars of Berbice in the final of the recently concluded Sweet Sixteen Football Championships at the Plaisance Community Centre Ground. They did employ some aggressive tactics but failed to complete the conversions.
In the lone goal in the match, their goalie took on one of the Conquerors’ strikers in front of the goal mouth, each trying to gain possession of the ball. It was then that Primo seized the opportunity, collected the loose ball, and blasted the back of the net. Despite several raids to each other’s goals, the situation remained unchanged to the final whistle.
In the feature match of the double-header, Camptown and Western Tigers mixed aggression with skill in the initial part of their encounter, but neither could have seized the initiative. Both teams enjoyed glorious moments, the most glaring when Camptown’s Kester Alleyne stormed into the opposition goal area with about 13 minutes to the halftime whistle. However, he was met by a stiff tackle from the Western Tiger’s defence, thwarting his efforts.
The battle for supremacy continued with both teams battling valiantly to seize the initiative. Shortly afterwards, during a goal skirmish in the 37th minute, Ryan Thomas slammed home Western Tigers’ first success. Camptown then earned a corner kick but once again the alertness of the ‘Tigers’ goalie denied them the opportunity of equalizing. Undaunted, they persisted and were duly rewarded one minute before the half time whistle sounded, compliments of a Troy Prescod 44th minute effort. The ‘Tigers’ launched several raids to the opposition’s goal in an effort to regain the advantage but were met by staunch resistance as the Camptown defence tightened up.
Seconds into the second half Camptown’s Leon Muir collected the ball and drove a humdinger to the opposition’s goal.
In what was probably the save of the night, Western Tigers’ custodian threw himself to the left and plucked the ball out of the air. Ten seconds later, Camptown received an opportunity to surge ahead after Western Tigers were penalized for a hand ball. Lance Rawlston was given the responsibility of seizing the advantage but erred badly when his strike was pushed over the bar.
Shortly afterwards Camptown’s Mark Muir was gifted with a pass and he thundered to the opposition’s goal. Luck seemed to have deserted his team as his shot went wide of the goal.
The unfortunate Muir received two other opportunities that should have been placed at the back of Western Tigers’ net, but his poor run of luck persisted. The final whistle sent the game into extra time and subsequently penalty kicks, where Western Tigers eventually prevailed.
They will face Fruta Conquerors tonight in a highly anticipated action packed encounter, where the winners take home $80,000 and the runners-up, $40,000. The third place finishers get $20,000, while the 4th the fourth placed team receive $20,000.
The tournament is sponsored by GT&T, Cellink, Banks DIH Ltd, Guinness, Western Union Igloo Ice Cream, Mullin Arts, Pro Signs and DeSinco Trading. Kick off time for tonight’s first match is 06:00hrs.
