A senior Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) official and another man were granted bail by a Lethem magistrate when they appeared before him on Monday to answer charges of indecently assaulting two teenaged schoolgirls.
John Jacobis, 43, the Officer-in-Charge of the GWI Rupununi operations and Erron Richmond, 31, a former staffer, both pleaded not guilty to the charges and were placed on $30,000 and $15,000 bail respectively by Magistrate Alan Wilson.
It is alleged that the two men assaulted the two girls aged, 17 and 14 year old on April 13 last, between 17:30 and 18:00 hours, at Lethem.
According to reports, the two girls were on their way to take meals for a relative who was being held at the Lethem Police Station when Jacobis and Richmond, who were in a vehicle, offered them a lift.
The two men waited until the girls had delivered the meals and again offered to take them back to their homes.
But instead of doing so, the men stopped at an isolated location where it is alleged Jacobis indecently assaulted the 17-year old while Richmond assaulted the 14-year old in the vehicle.
The girls then told the men that they wanted to urinate and after going into the nearby bushes, they made good their escape by running almost a mile to safety.
The matter was reported to the police. The men were also charged for using abusive language committed on Judy Indach, the guardian of one of the teenaged girls.
According to the prosecution, Indach had approached the men to enquire about the reports she had received from the girls.
However she was verbally abused by the man and this was also reported to the police. Jacobis pleaded not guilty to the abusive language charge and was granted bail in the sum of $10,000 while Richmond issued a public apology after being fined $10,000. Richmond in his explanation in relation to the abusive language charge told the magistrate that he was under the influence of alcohol.
Both men are to return to court on September 8.
