Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy has expressed his disappointment in the Guyana Press Association (GPA) for not putting forward any proposals to the ministry to fund the training of reporters in enhancing their reporting skills on HIV/AIDS.
Dr. Ramsammy noted that in his years as Health Minister, he has always urged for the media to come together and request assistance to do their work as it relates to HIV/AIDS issues. The Guyana Chronicle has applied and received some support from the ministry in this aspect, but according to Minister Ramsammy, he would prefer to work with the press association to build capacity among reporters.
“I am expressing my disappointment in the media as a group… because at one time there was a group that did a show on NCN every week and a number of reporters from the different television stations were part of the initiative that was led by people like Nazima Raghubir, but that was only one initiative,” Minister Ramsammy said.
He added that his ministry is willing to give to civil society, but there is only so much that the ministry can do.
“For the media association, it is a simple thing. They only need to put forward a proposal on how they can build capacity for reporters so that they can be trained.” The Health Minister explained that if this is done, then reporters can even be sent overseas to provide coverage on HIV/AIDS issues.
“Maybe through these grants reporters can get to go, but it can’t be people asking for money just for that. It has to be to build capacity here and then things like that can be done.”
