Another person has been charged and remanded for the murder of Guyana Power and Light Security Superintendent, Clifford Peters.
Paul James, 28, was not required to plead when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, at the Georgetown Magistrates Court, yesterday.
It was alleged that James, on May 4, last, murdered Clifford Peters. He was unrepresented when he appeared in court yesterday.
When asked by the magistrate if he wished to make a comment, James who is a miner, refrained from saying anything.
Police Prosecutor, Denise Griffith, told the court that another person has been charged with Peters’ murder, and she would prefer the same date when the other defendant is present in court.
James was remanded to prison, and is expected to make another court appearance on June 5.
Twenty-two-year old Arnim Griffith, of 17 West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, has also been charged with the murder of Clifford Peters.
Griffith was represented by Attorney- at- law, Basil Williams. Williams said that the case is one of the “tragedies of the judicial system”.
The lawyer had claimed that his client was charged without any proper evidence tying him to the crime.
Williams had further argued, that he was aggrieved by the situation, and also said that he knows for a fact that the police are doing this as a publicity stunt, since everyone knows that the police don’t use forensic works in their investigations.
Clifford Peters, a retired senior Superintendent of Police, was shot several times in the head and chest, and died en route to the Georgetown Public Hospital, on May 4.
At the time of his death, he, along with a crew from Guyana Power and Light, were removing illegal wires in the Lamaha Park area.
There was speculation that Peters was targeted for jewellery he normally wears. His colleagues and family were of the opinion that he was killed because of the work he was doing.
