Kevin Spencer scored two second half goals to lead host GCC to a hard fought 2-1 win over Old Fort in the opening game of this year’s Farfan & Mendes Men’s First Division Outdoor Hockey Competition, which got started yesterday, at the GCC ground.
After a goalless first period, GCC took the lead very early on the resumption when Spencer, stationed inside the box, took full advantage of a goalmouth scrimmage to tap in the ball from close range.
With both teams struggling to adjust to the outdoor setup after a barrage of indoor competitions, the passing was not the usual accurate and crisp stuff and it looked lacklustre at times.
However, Old Fort won a penalty corner and a ripper by Aderemi Simon levelled the scores at 1-1. GCC took the decisive lead in the dying moments of the game when Spencer collected a pass of the right flank produced an excellent dummy that left goalkeeper Mikhail Smith out of position, before smashing a powerful shot into the far corner of an empty goal.
After a few anxious raids by Old Fort, none of which got in proximity to really threaten, GCC comfortably held on to register the first set of points in the tournament.
The competition continues on Monday with GCC taking on Hikers, at the same venue.
