Under the sweltering afternoon sun, on a day when Guyana celebrated its 43rd Independence Anniversary, Uprising and Santos helped themselves to huge wins, as the Western Union first-division league continued at the Camptown Community Centre ground, on Tuesday.
Both winners on the day were relegated from the Premier ranks and signaled their intentions quite early that they intend to return to the higher level, next season.
Uprising hammered 8-man Thomas United 7-0 in the first game, the feature producing a 5-0 win for Santos over Black Pearl, who started the encounter with seven players before being at full strength close to the halfway mark.
Santos’ Michael Pedro and Quacy Price took full advantage of Black Pearl’s misfortune of not being short at the beginning of the game.
Pedro tucked in a double in the 17th and 33rd minute while Price netted the first of his hattrick in the 30th minute. Santos went to attacking mode from the whistle as they sought to make the best use of the advantage in terms of numbers, and they succeeded.
Most of the play was concentrated in Black Pearl’s half during the first 45 minutes. The segment saw Black Pearl putting up stiffer resistance, but was never a serious threat to Santos’defence. Price closed off a productive day at the office with goals in the 68th and 80th minute.
Uprising, the 2007 division-one champions took full advantage of Thomas United’s meager numbers to not only take full points but boosted their goal average too.
They were able to convert seven goals, but created dozens of opportunities against
their hapless opponents. Daniel Favourite helped himself to a double, hitting the nets in the 4th and 30th minute. The other players on target were Samuel Dey (15), Terrence Lowe (45), Freeman Fordyce (58) and Omali Nassey in the 68th. Action continues this weekend.
