Chetram Kishum, a 54-year-old Rosignol businessman claims that he avoided a robbery one week ago, on May 19, but not before he received a beating.
According to Mr. Kishum, who is a trader, at the time of the incident, he and an overseas based-Guyanese friend had just stepped out of the New Building Society at Rosignol, West Bank Berbice.
The two men were on the Rosignol Public just outside the banking institution with Kishun carrying $100,000 and his friend, a similar sum. They had withdrawn the money a few minutes earlier.
The businessman recalled that while leaving the institution a man approached them from behind and launched an assault on him.
“He started cuffing me up on my back; he cuff me up in my head and neck and when I turned around I recognized him, he is ‘Pyroo’ a deportee from Barbados.
He continued to cuff me and all the time he trying to push his hand in my pocket. I pushed him away.”
Within minutes, the incident attracted the attention of a passing traffic police rank, “The policeman caught him red-handed and took him to the Blairmont Police Station.”
Mr. Kishum was advised to go over to the Blairmont Police Station where he gave a statement and was sent for a medical examination at the Fort Wellington Hospital.
The man claims that he was subsequently informed by ranks at the Blairmont Police Station that the suspect was to have appeared in court on Friday.
According to police reports, Wendell Phagwah, of Rosignol was charged with assault causing actual bodily harm.
He did not attend court at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court so an arrest warrant was issued for him.
