Parents of students of a popular private school in the city are calling for an apology from the institution’s administration following reports that students were strip-searched last Friday.
Kaieteur News understands that at the time, the school’s administration was probing the theft of a student’s cellular phone.
According to a parent of one the affected students, on Friday a student reported the loss of a cell phone and one particular class was targeted for a search.
The students were first ‘patted down’; the males by the principal and females by a female teacher.
The cell phone was not found.
The students were then ordered into separate rest rooms where they were allegedly told to strip their clothing.
According to the parent, the females were asked to take off their clothes in the presence of a female teacher, while the males were made to do likewise by the principal.
“The girls were made to take off their skirts, shirts and tights,” the parents told this newspaper.
Despite all of this the parent said that the cellular phone was still not found.
“We don’t mind if they were patted down, but to strip search them is atrocious,” the parent said.
“They should call all the parents and apologise,” she added.
The parents said that they will be coming together to form a plan of action if the apology is not forthcoming.
