…as pickup slams into tractor/trailer
One person perished and at least 11 more are hospitalized following a horrific smash-up between a pick-up and a tractor trailer on the Number 53 Village Public Road, Berbice last night.
The dead person’s name was given as Drupattie Indar of Canje, Berbice.
At least two other passengers are critical and were transferred to the Georgetown hospital while the other injured persons were being treated at the New Amsterdam Hospital up to late last night.
Details of the accident were sketchy but this newspaper understands that the dead and most of the injured were returning from an outing at Orealla up the Berbice River.
According to reports following the outing the touring party hitched a ride in a pick-up that is assigned to a community policing group in Berbice.
Eyewitnesses said that the driver of the pick-up lost control of the vehicle and slammed into the tractor and trailer.
Several persons were first taken to the Skeldon Hospital where Indar was reportedly pronounced dead.
So overwhelmed was that facility that most of the injured were rushed to the much more equipped New Amsterdam Hospital.
One of the victims who was treated and sent away told this newspaper that she could not recall much of what really transpired.
“All I know is that I wake up and se people lying down next to me in de hospital,” the victim said.
Last night’s accident adds to the growing list of fatal accident that have occurred since the beginning of the month of may.
