The Cavalier’s Sports and Tour Club will commemorate Guyana’s 43rd Independence Anniversary with two events.
The first takes place Tuesday and will witness race walkers from several Caribbean Islands matching steps with their Guyanese counterparts, while the second event gets underway in Linden on Sunday May 31.
In the first event, walkers would move off from the University of Guyana, Turkeyen Campus, proceed west along the Railway Embankment then South into Sherriff Street for the finish at the National Cultural Centre, Homestretch Avenue.
The Linden race commences at the Bayrock Recreational Centre, Wisroc and subsequently culminates at the Christianburg Sports Ground.
National race walk champion, Rudolph Mitchell, aiming for the 100th landmark, will once again attempt to add another notch on his well etched gun. Should he win the first event, he would cross into the proverbial nervous nineties.
However, he would have to stave off the challenges of Jonathon Fagundes and O’Neil Joseph, two of his fiercest rivals to date. The first three finishers in the respective categories would receive trophies and other prizes. These include male and female (seniors), juniors, veterans and the differently-abled.
Meanwhile, the executive of the CS&TC is appealing to members of the corporate community as well as all sports loving individuals for support to make the Independence walk a reality. Contributors may donate trophies, water or cash for transportation purposes.
