Action in the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport Inter-Block football activity shifts to Mahdia next week and two business houses in the area have come forward early to throw their support behind the event. Roger Hinds, who owns and operates several businesses in the community, has put up the $50,000 first prize. Hinds was answering a call made by Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony and Parliamentary Secretary Steve Ninvalle for corporate support for this venture.
Georgetown businessman, Frank DeAbreu of DeSinco Trading, has donated a trophy, which will be awarded to the winners of the tournament. Mahdia businesswoman Amanda Soloman has also indicated that she will be offering support. Both Soloman and Hinds assisted the staging of last year’s event.
The event starts Monday and concludes Tuesday, Independence Day at the area Community Centre ground under lights.
Four teams are down to compete. The respective winners on opening night will collide in the final on Tuesday. Defending champs Airstrip tackle runner-up Central Mahdia in what could be called a grudge match that promises fireworks at 6:30pm, while Campbelltown face Roger Hinds Lions in the nightcap.
Ninvalle disclosed that Mahdia is one of three areas in Region 8 where the Inter-Block will be staged. The other being Paramakatoi and Cato. Action is also set for Lethem in Region 9.
Competition has concluded at Beterverwagting, while Ann’s Grove is set to commence this weekend and Victoria, all on the East Coast, is underway. Timehri and Grove on the East Bank are nearing the closing stage.
