Toddler drowns after slipping through gate

After summoning the Essequibo police search party, the Colahar family of Back Street, Affiance, Essequibo Coast, recovered their missing 18-month-old dead in the Capoey canal. He had drowned.
Avinesh Colahar, called Avin, went missing on Sunday around 5.30pm.
Today, the child’s body was at its parent’s home waiting to be cremated at 1pm at the La Union foreshore.
A tearful Nalanie Deoranie, the child’s mother, who was being comforted by close relatives and neighbours, said that on Sunday last at around 17.30 hours she was occupied doing her normal household chores, while the child’s father, Daljeet Colahar, an employee of the Imam Bacchus company, was boiling coconut oil in the back yard, and Avin, was playing in the yard.
According to Nalanie, who described the youngest of her three children, all boys, as very sensible and smart, said Avin, would usually open the back gate of his parents back home and would visit his aunt who lives next door.
She said that her husband had retired from boiling the coconut oil and was lying in the hammock, under the house when he saw Avin open the back gate and he thought that his child was again making his way for his aunt. Instead, he ventured towards a nearby trench. But this was not known at the time.
Nalanie said they organised a search party of friends and neighbours and began their search that lasted from Sunday night until noon on Monday when they fished the body from the Capoey canal.
Avinesh has left to mourn his 12-year-old brother, Kevin, and nine-year-old Mervin.
