Dear Editor,
I agree with many of the points made in Eric Phillips’ letter of May 13th in the Kaieteur News (Unmitigated gall to publicly write lies about slavery and indentureship).
However, because of its abusive tone I had to force myself to read it in its entirety.
Mr. Phillips should understand that he would be taken seriously only if he does not engage in a rant, or a cuss-out.
At one point in his letter, Mr. Phillips noted that Obama is looking on. This leaves me a bit puzzled.
What does President Obama of the United States have to do with a debate about historical Guyanese experiences?
“Obama looks on”? Really? He cares about the difference between indentureship and slavery in Guyana? I guess Obama’s got nothing else as vitally important to look at.
Maybe Obama wasn’t looking at that those African pirates he ordered shot to save a white ship captain.
Black nationalists who see only President Obama’s skin colour and imagine it as a basis for some kind of “kit and kin” relationship will be in for a rude awakening.
As someone wrote earlier, Obama is beyond skin colour. He is more about brain power and he will see right through the darkness of all made-up racial grievances.
As for reparations for slavery, I think this should be done.
The descendants of slaves must approach the British and insist on such restitution.
