The continuous power outages on West Coast Demerara seem never ending, as residents are still complaining. For the past week, West Demerara has been plagued with constant blackouts, sometimes twice per day, without any notice from the Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL).
Some residents told this newspaper that the situation seems to be getting worse, as recently it has been observed that the power outages would occur simultaneously in almost all of the communities on the West Coast.
Business people in the area are also being severely affected by this situation, especially those involved in the meat business. They have to spend money on fuel for the generators, whenever there is a power outage in their respective area.
Only recently, Chief Executive Officer of GPL, Bharat Dindyal, at a press conference said the blackout situation on the West Coast will ease by the end of the month, as two machines, a five-megawatt (MW) Niigata and a three-megawatt Crossly Machine are expected to be back into operation at the Garden of Eden Power station.
Dindyal had explained that the Niigata Machine suffered an alternator failure in January, while the Crossly Machine suffered a bearing failure in March.
It was noted that the alternator for the Niigata machine has been shipped to the UK for repairs and is expected back this month while the special bearings required for the Crossly machine would be delivered by next week.
In the meantime, two additional machines are also expected to be in service at the Garden of Eden Plant, allowing for adequate generation capacity. However, Dindyal had cautioned that the power outages would still remain weak.
He had said that at the end of last December, the available generation in the Demerara Interconnected System dropped from 78MW to 70MW currently due to the failure of these machines.
Dindyal explained that the eight Wartsila machines contribute 44 megawatts of the 68MW needed to meet the Demerara peak and are therefore critical to the maintenance of a reliable and adequate supply.
