With the aim of sensitising stakeholders of trade opportunities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade in collaboration with the European Union Trade.Com Facility will spearhead a number of initiatives.
According to a release issued yesterday, initiatives aimed at enhancing stakeholder awareness on trade issues and building capacity in exploiting related business opportunities.
It was noted that the initiatives are a continuation of the dialogue between the government and the private sector to sensitise stakeholders on the trade opportunities arising from the recently concluded trade agreement with the European Union.
This move, the release added, comes in response to the need for urgent sensitisation and capacity building with respect to the implementation of the CARIFORUM-EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA).
As such a series of workshops targeting eight rural communities, including Women’s Group and other non-state actors will be undertaken during the period May – June, the release added.
“Specifically, communities in Berbice, Linden, Essequibo and Amerindian communities in Regions One, Two and Nine will benefit from these initiatives. By building capacity to exploit business/trade opportunities, the aim is to contribute to the mainstreaming of the peoples in these areas and to incrementally build capacity.”
According to the release, three workshops are targeted for a particular area. The first it said is intended to build awareness among stakeholders on the provisions of the trade agreements, including the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).
This will be followed by Round Table discussions that will identify potential business opportunities arising from the provisions of the new trading arrangements, identify challenges and threats and to receive guidance on market requirements.
It was disclosed that the final round of the workshops would focus on Business/Investment Planning and sources of technical assistance/support.
Communities will be informed of the Workshop in the respective areas and those interested could make contact with the Ministries for further information, the release added.
