Just four days after playing to a commendable 19-19 tie against Yamaha Caribs, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) made an even bigger step when they beat Hornets 12-10 to take pole position in the Trophy Stall-sponsored 10-a-side Rugby Competition which continued yesterday, at the National Park.
The Army got the win on the stroke of full time when Cordell Carrington converted a try scored by Joseph Rahaman after they trailed Hornets 5-10 through a brace of tries from Robin Cordis.
Earlier, Oslen Olivierre provided the lead for the soldiers when he bullied his way over the try-line despite a host of tackles from the Hornets backline. That gave them a 5-0 advantage at the half.
The favourites Hornets, however, rebounded shortly after the interval when the speedy Cordis ended over the try-line with Rahaman unable to stop his forward thrust. He scored once again, this time picking up a fumble, before breaking away down the left flank and hurled himself over the backline to give his team the lead.
With the game near completion, the slimly-built Rahaman was literally pushed over the try-line to level the scores, before Carrington calmly converted for the Army to register the first set of full points by any team so far in the tournament.
Speaking after the win, coach of the GDF Clinton Clarke, who recently returned from a coaching stint in England, told Kaieteur Sport that the difference this season is that they are playing as a team and working more hard at practice sessions, hence the encouraging results.
“We really want to win this tournament, the Course in England really taught me a lot and I’m imparting all that I’ve learnt to the team,” Clarke disclosed.
