Delroy Leitch, 32, a labourer of Alness Village, Corentyne, was on Monday committed by Magistrate Chandra Sohan to stand trial for rape at the next session of the Berbice High Court.
Magistrate Sohan found that a prima facie case had been made out against the accused at the end of a preliminary inquiry, which commenced on March 17, last year at the Whim Magistrate’s Court.
Leitch is accused of raping a 13-year-old female between August 16 and August 19, 2005 at Alness, Corentyne.
Prosecutor, Sergeant Michael Grant, had told the court that the child, who hails from New Amsterdam, would usually visit her aunt who lives at Alness.
He said that the defendant also lives at the same Alness house and he took the opportunity to sexually assault the child on several occasions during her visits.
The court was told that the accused had also threatened to kill the child if she ever told anyone about the incidents. But the child subsequently confided in her relatives who reported the matter to the police at the Whim Police Station, leading to Leitch’s arrest.
He was initially placed on $100,000 bail.
Senior Counsel Marcel Crawford appeared for the accused.
