A Long Island US-based businessman is facing the court for allegedly driving his vehicle in a manner to deliberately cause injury to Zalima Deen, the wife of his brother-in-law.
The businessman, Kahkan Ramzan, also known as Kahkan Ramjohn, was charged with wanton driving committed on March 3, this year.
The incident occurred at Dundee, Mahaicony and Ramzan has made two appearances before Magistrate Hemant Ramdhani at the Mahaicony Magistrate’s Court.
The incident stems from a land dispute between Ramzan and the victim’s husband, Mark Deen.
According to the police, on March 3, Deen, who resides at Good Hope, East Coast Demerara, went with his wife to a plot of land at Dundee, Mahaicony owned by his parents, to pray for his dead father who is buried there.
The gate to the premises was locked and the couple could not enter.
A few minutes later Ramzan pulled up and claimed to be the owner of the property.
Ramzan allegedly drove his car with intent to run over Deen who managed to get out of the way.
Deen’s wife then attempted to intervene but Ramzan reportedly drove the car in a dangerous manner, knocking Zalima Deen to the ground.
He then fled the scene and subsequently went to the police station where he reported that he was assaulted by the couple.
Meanwhile, Zalima Deen left to see a doctor, who diagnosed that she sustained injury to her right foot.
Her husband then went to the police who, acting on the report made by Ramzan, promptly carried out a search of his vehicle.
At the time the police were unaware that the Deens were the victims of what was described as a deliberate act of wanton driving by Ramzan.
On April 5, the Deens went back to the police and presented a medical report of the injury the woman sustained. They were subsequently sent away.
But while on their way home, they received a telephone call from the police informing them to return to the Mahaicony Police Station.
While at the station they were told that a senior official from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions had alleged that they were being abusive to the businessman.
However, the police rank informed the official that this was not so since the couple was in the presence of the police.
Kaieteur News understands that the official had actually instructed the police to arrest the couple.
The following day, the couple approached Attorney General Charles Ramson with their story.
According to reports the Attorney General subsequently contacted the DPP official and issued a stern warning not to interfere in the matter.
Resulting from this intervention by the Attorney General, the charges against the couple were withdrawn and the wanton driving charge was instituted against the businessman.
At his first court appearance, Ramzan pleaded not guilty and was placed on $25,000 bail.
He is represented by attorney at law Jerome Khan.
Ramzan, who also resides at 131 Lindley Avenue, Nandy Park and 220 Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice, operates the Atlantic Cable Service on West Coast Berbice.
