– disappointed with lack of competition
Cleveland Forde continued his impressive regional Season in Trinidad and Tobago when he cruised to victory in the 1500m open race at the Manny Ramjohn Memorial Track and Field meet yesterday afternoon.
Forde, who departed Guyana on Saturday for the event, told Kaieteur Sport that his aim is to continue improving his times. He ran a commendable 4:01 seconds yesterday ahead of Jude LaRose (4:06) and George Smith (4:12).
The top local athlete has a personal best time of 3:46.51 in the 1500m and while speaking to this newspaper, he expressed disappointment over the fact that a lot of the region’s leading athletes were absent from the race.
“I am disappointed that I had no competition,” he said, after arguably one of the region’s most successful athletes, Pamenos Ballantyne, a usual fixture on the Trinidad calendar, did not compete in the meet.
Apart from Ballantyne, Guyana’s Lionel D’Andrade and Kelvin Johnson also reneged on competing in the race after citing an intention to do so. Forde said that he was looking forward to a more competitive 1500m race.
Nevertheless, “It was good, I had to be satisfied with that performance until I could get the right competition,” the multiple South American 10k winner said from the Twin Island Republic shortly after his 1500m event.
Up to press time yesterday, Forde was gearing to compete in the 5000m after indicating a willingness to run based on how the event appears on the meet programme. It seems that Forde was comfortable with his rest period. (Edison Jefford)
