Dear Editor,
We are beginning to experience the effects of heavy rains and as is customary in Guyana, May/June is the rainy season that put fright in most farmers, especially in the riverain areas.
I would like to make a special appeal to all farmers to make maximum use of the dry days we have during these months to carry out drainage activities, especially, maintenance of the draining system surrounding farms.
I am compelled to say that the works currently undertaken by the Ministry of Agriculture through the NDIA at the mouth of the Abary River is long awaited and is happening at the most opportune time.
The dredging or clearing of the mouth of the Abary River will not only bring relief to the farmers in Abary but also Mahaicony, since the waterways are interconnected and a large amount of lands in the Mahaicony scheme actually drain through the Abary.
As a farmer who cultivates strictly rice, and now getting involved into fish (Tilapia) production, I welcome this initiative and am very sure that all my other colleagues are smiling right now to know that they will not suffer losses of their crops due to inadequate drainage.
Once the Abary River mouth is cleared, then the flow of water will increase thus creating a huge draft which will also assist in removing silt from the ocean.
Recently, the Minister visited the operations and I must take the opportunity to congratulate him in coming out to the fields and to be on the spot where work is ongoing, also bringing along his technical persons to have a fist hand feeling of what is actually happening. I think only then he can understand the seriousness of the situation.
I would like to make a request to have the excavator and pontoon spending a few additional days at the river mouth to ensure that it does not silt up immediately after it is cleared.
This is because we understand the nature of the river and ocean and how drifts can actually cause siltation. I hope that our request be considered.
