A six-year-old boy was killed at around 16:45 hrs yesterday after he was struck by a car while retrieving a ball from the Perseverance, Essequibo Public Road.
According to reports, Jarrien Dover, a pupil of Fisher Primary School, was playing cricket in a yard with two other friends when one of them struck the ball onto the roadway.
Dover ran outside to retrieve the ball and was struck by a car, PEE 1117, which was driven by a man who was transporting his pregnant wife.
There are reports that the driver failed to see the child who had emerged suddenly from behind a pile of sand on the roadway.
The injured boy was transported by the driver to the Suddie Hospital where he succumbed to his head injuries.
In the wake of the tragedy, ranks on the Essequibo Coast are appealing to residents to desist from dumping sand on parapets.
