ITHACA, WEST BANK BERBICE- Police in Berbice are on the hunt for a man who allegedly slashed the throats of his lover, her daughter and her niece.
Dead is a 31-year old plantain chip vendor, Gertrude Edwards of Lot 282 Ithaca Main Road, West Bank of Berbice.
The dead woman’s daughter, 13-year-old Kerry Edwards, and her niece 16-year-old Samantha Charles are both in the Intensive Care Unit of the New Amsterdam Hospital. Both of them underwent surgery early Friday morning and are said to be in a stable condition.
Police in Berbice recovered two knives from the scene, one of which is suspected to be the murder weapon.
The woman’s other two children – five-year old Althea Williamson and six-year old Glynston Williamson — were unharmed.
According to police reports, the suspect is 30-year old Glynston Williamson, also known as ‘Addie’ of Angoy’s Avenue in New Amsterdam.
At the time of the incident Edwards, her three children and her niece were at the home, having returned from a fair in the community.
The suspect was apparently in the house and an argument ensued. “She throat burst open; everything burst open…just the skin at the back holding it. The two children necks slash up too,” a source said.
The incident took place just around 05:00 hours on Friday.
It is unclear what actually took place in the home but after the woman was injured, she ran over to a neighbour.
According to police reports, the occupants of that house were aroused from their slumber by a knocking on the door. When one of the occupants of the house peeked through a window, he recognised Gertrude Edwards on their landing. They raised the alarm and the police were informed.
When the police from the Blairmont Police Station arrived on the scene, the younger children were still in the house and were rushed across the river to the New Amsterdam Hospital.
Samantha Charles, after sustaining her injury, ran further down the road to some relatives.
One woman in the area said that she had never seen the woman with the man and if he frequented the home “it had to be nighttime when nobody couldn’t see he.”
Before 11:00 hours yesterday, a team from the CID Georgetown arrived at Ithaca to assist their counterparts with a tracker dog. The animal took them on a trail that led to the backlands of Ithaca but the suspect was nowhere to be found. Gertrude Edwards, who grew up in Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, shacked up with the suspect in Angoy’s Avenue for a number of years.
Some time late last year she fled from him with the children and her niece subsequently joined them.
In a press release, the police said that the killer and the woman shared a relationship.
