SHEET ANCHOR, EAST CANJE – Yesterday a lone bandit allegedly robbed a Western Union outlet at Lot 82, Sheet Anchor in East Canje, making off with $647,704.
The attack was carried out on the cashier Nalini Paltu of East Canefield in Canje about 11:15 hours. She and another staff member were in the office when the man entered.
According to police in Berbice, the assailant was wearing a cap and had a piece of cloth tied around his face. What caught the attention of the Western Union staff was the fact that the visitor had entered the building using the eastern door, which is said to be unusual. After observing this, they hid under the counter.
The intruder, who carried a cutlass, used it to break the glass, climbed in the compartment and removed $322,000 from a drawer.
He then ordered the cashier to open the vault from where he took the remainder of cash, placed it in a haversack and fled on foot.
The matter was reported to the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam and ranks were on the scene within minutes.
Up to press time, no one was arrested.
