Dwayne Stevenson, 40, of 23 John Street, Werk-en-Rust, was yesterday remanded to prison on a charge of stealing a laptop computer on April 24, last, at Princes Street. The computer belonged to Sharmina Denny.
According to Police Prosecutor Seetaram, the defendant would normally frequent the Princes Street guest house, where the computer went missing, to do odd jobs.
He further told the court that on the day in question the man stole the laptop from a guest who was staying at the guest house. Seetaram also stated that Stevenson was recorded on a surveillance camera removing the article, which has not been recovered.
The prosecutor stated that the issue of bail should not be considered since the defendant had several brushes with the law, all similar in nature.
Seetaram explained that if bail is given there is the likelihood of Stevenson repeating the offence.
Bail was denied and the accused is expected to make another court appearance on May 15.
