Police have detained two men who have convinced them that they were responsible for the murder of taxi driver Rawle Henry.
Based on the men’s story, the police are now sure that Henry was the victim of a carjacking.
Henry’s body, with head almost severed, was discovered on Sunday afternoon in a clump of bushes at Onion Field, La Bonne Intention, East Coast Demerara, a few hours after the car he was driving was found in a trench, two miles away in the Sparendaam Squatting Area.
The two suspects who are from Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, were picked up by police yesterday after solid information was provided.
They reportedly told investigators that they hired Henry from the city and took him up the East Coast of Demerara.
They said that they wanted a car to carry out a robbery and they had chosen Henry because he was expendable, since one of them had an old grievance to settle with him.
Using a makeshift weapon they held the taxi driver at gunpoint and ordered him out of the car after they had stabbed him in his ribs with an ice pick.
The taxi driver was then tortured and subsequently killed.
A detective on the East Coast of Demerara told this newspaper that apart from his head being partly severed, Henry was stabbed in his ribs and had burn marks on his chest and penis.
“These are definite signs that he was tortured before he was killed,” the detective said.
According to a source, after dumping Henry’s body, the men proceeded to Sparendaam where they were joined by two accomplices.
But they encountered difficulty with his car which ended up overboard.
Residents of the Sparendaam Squatting Area, where the car Henry was driving was found, told this newspaper that they did not hear or see anything when the car was dumped in the trench there.
One resident said that she awoke and was surprised to see the car in the trench.
The car was stripped of its CD player and speakers and there was blood on the back seat which suggested that Henry was wounded in the car or was already dead and was transported to the place where he was eventually dumped.
The two men, one of whom was previously arrested for armed robbery, are expected to be charged with the taxi driver’s murder soon.
