The Ministry of Health is advising all private hospitals to establish a bank at their institutions, in an effort to ease the long process of requesting blood from the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS).
According to Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, while the NBTS will provide the private hospitals with the blood they need, accountability will play a major role in this process.
The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) recently established its own bank. They no longer need to make a direct request every time a patient needs blood.
“So they should never have any need to make requests from the NBTS. They would have to account for the blood given to them so every day an accounting is done and the blood is replaced that they use,” Minister Ramsammy explained.
If the same practice is adopted by the private health institutions, then according to Minister Ramsammy, they also would not be required to make any request from the blood bank.
“They can encourage persons to donate and manage their own banks. They have to ensure that the infrastructure is in place, such as a blood refrigerator.”
The Health Minister said that the private institutions cannot have a refrigerator for 10 units of blood when they request 100 units. So if your daily volume is 20 units, then you must have space for thirty units of blood.”
If this is done, then according to Minister Ramsammy, the problems many persons encounter in getting blood on a daily basis would be reduced, as the long procedure for requesting blood from the bank would no longer exist.
“They have to account for it so as to ensure that there won’t be any wastage. A fee would have to be paid for the screening of the blood that the private hospitals would request.”
Workers from the NBTS would visit the private health institutions on a daily basis and account for the amount of blood they used.
However, the NBTS would only charge the private hospitals for the blood that they utilize.
“So we are trying to ensure greater efficiency to provide our people with a better service.”
