Another prison officer has been caught trying to smuggle a prohibited substance into a penal institution. This time it’s the Lusignan Prison, East Coast Demerara.
Kaieteur News understands that around 18:00 hours on Monday officers at the gate of the Lusignan prison unearthed eight grams of marijuana on the rank’s person.
According to reports, senior personnel at the facility had suspected the officer, whose name was given as Ganesh Jaipaul, of smuggling drugs into the prison.
As he reported for duty, he was stopped and asked to declare everything on his person.
A thorough check was made and the marijuana was found in his pants pocket.
The rank, who hails from North Melanie Damishana, immediately admitted that the weed was his and he was subsequently handed over to the police who are expected to institute charges shortly.
Earlier this year, a Pastor was held trying to smuggle drugs, money and a cell phone into the Georgetown Prison. A few weeks later a prison officer was similarly nabbed.
