Following the tragic accident that occurred in Ruby, East Bank Essequibo, early Sunday morning and which claimed the life of Ramesh “Jerry” Sookdeo, 27-year-old Richard Whyte, of Parika, East Bank Essequibo is still in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
His mother, Shirley Whyte, said, yesterday, that he has not been able to talk to family members properly since the accident, and they are still baffled about what really took place on that fateful night.
Both of Whyte’s legs and his right arm are broken. He is also nursing severe head injuries. The woman said that doctors advised that he must not eat or drink anything for now.
She noted that Whyte does not know that his friend, 26-year-old Ramesh ‘Jerry’ Sookdeo, died in the accident. The woman said that if he is to learn of his friend’s death, then his condition could take a turn for the worse.
Whyte was in the passenger seat of a Silver Mitsubishi Lancer, PKK 1134, which was being driven by Sookdeo, when the car veered off the roadway and slammed into a fence.
The driver, Sookdeo, died on the spot, while Whyte was flung out of the car before it crashed.
Reports reaching Kaieteur News stated that Sookdeo, a popular minibus conductor on West Coast Demerara, was drinking with six friends at Burns Beer Garden, in Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo on Saturday night.
The group left the beer garden around midnight in two cars — Sookdeo driving a Silver Mitsubishi Lancer, PKK 1134 with Whyte in the passenger seat. The other friends boarded another car, PLL 5706.
Kaieteur News understands that the friends decided to drag race on the road since it was early in the morning and traffic was light.
But as they approached a hump on the Ruby Bridge, both drivers lost control and veered off the roadway.
The Mitsubishi Lancer toppled several times, and eventually landed on a nearby fence.
The other car slammed into a house, knocking out four posts and damaging the steps, but a safety air bag saved the driver, Romeo Randolph, from serious injury. The other occupants also escaped with minor lacerations.
It was reported that these occupants came out of the vehicle looking for Ramesh, not knowing that he was already dead in the car.
Occupants of the damaged house said that they were ‘shocked out of their sleep’ by the impact. They were unaware that an accident had occurred until they came downstairs and made the gruesome discovery.
The Mitsubishi Lancer was damaged beyond recognition.
Ramesh ‘Jerry’ Sookdeo leaves to mourn his wife, Shivanie Sookdeo, who is in Canada, his parents, three sisters and a brother.
