The battle for early points and goal average is set to intensify this evening at the Tucville ground, day two, of the 2009 Cellink Premier League.
Meeting in the feature game from 20:00hrs will be the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) who finished third in last year’s competition, and Pele, who placed sixth. The two teams will also clash in the quarter-finals of the Mackeson/Digicel Sweet 16 tournament tomorrow at the Plaisance ground.
The opening salvo this evening will see Georgetown Football Club (GFC), who displayed determination and fight in ending as the fifth best team after gaining promotion as the runner-up side to division one winners Uprising in the 2007 competition, matching skills with Fruta Conquerors, who ended last season above GFC.
Tonight, the respective teams are expected to go full throttle in a competition which is regarded as the best the city has to offer.
GDF’s armory will include the lethal strike force of Stellon David and Gavin Wilson along with central defender Selwyn Isaacs, Sheik Kamal and Royan Morrison among others.
Pele, hoping for an improved showing in this year’s league, will look to Captain Dirk Archer for astute guidance. He will rely on fellow midfielder Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant, goalkeeper Shemroy Arthur, Quincy Hemerding, Okeny Fraser and Solomon Austin for able back-up in a match that is expected to be fast paced.
Both sides are fortunate to have full time coaches unlike some of their rivals and this advantage can be an added fillip in their victory bid.
The GFC/Conquerors match-up is also expected to be an exciting contest with the emerging Bourda Blues, aiming to maintain and build on the momentum from last year. Conquerors, in the rebuilding mode and with home advantage, will present a good test.
The home team will be a mixture of youth and experience. Veterans Lennox Charles, Lester Peters, Gerald Gritten and Devon Forde, team up with the younger generation, the likes of custodian Oswald Cornette, Captain Joylon Harry, Trevon Lythcott and Delon Williams.
GFC’s charge will be spearheaded by their skipper Clayton Mc Cloud, Rodwell Wellington, Shad Fernandes, Lawrence Fanfair, Roy Stanton, Gregory Denny, Desmond McKenzie and Peter Parks.
The action continues Sunday with defending champions Alpha clashing with Flamingo at 6:00pm and Sunburst Camptown colliding with BK Western Tigers in the nightcap from 8:00pm.
