The battle for semi final places in the second edition of the Mackeson/Digicel Sweet 16 knockout competition is set to commence this evening at the Plaisance Community Centre ground.
Defending champions Sunburst Camptown will take on giant killers Ann’s Grove in the evening’s main clash with the first game being between the Guyana Defence Force and B.V Triumph United.
Ironically, these four teams also advanced to last year’s quarter finals, with Camptown and GDF going on to the finals. In the final two group of 16 games contested on Tuesday at the same venue, Georgetown Football Club (GFC) blanked Bakewell Buxton Stars 4-1 behind a double from Peter Parks while Berbice’s Cougars spoiled the home fans’ party with a 2-0 win over Plaisance F.C.
Buxton never posed a serious threat to GFC as the city team gradually took them out of the game.
Paul Daniels scored in the 2nd minute; Parks was on target in the 26th and 72nd minutes with the other coming off the boot of Teshawn Blackman in the 81st. Kwame Moffatt was able to pull one back for the East Coast team in the 82nd.
Cougars, with not so nice memories at this venue, changed that around completely with a commanding display against Plaisance who had reached the final eight last year.
The Berbicians sealed their place and a quarter-final date with GFC in a two-minute span.
Horace Roach in the 32nd and Ryan Stewart one minute later were the players rocking the nets.
The final two quarter-final matches will be contested on Saturday. Alpha United battle Pele and Cougars face GFC. The respective winners will move on to the semis.
Kick off time this evening is 18:00hrs.
