Ex-army officer, Deryck Greenidge, 55, of Mocha, East Bank Demerara, reportedly attempted to marry a woman yesterday without seeking a divorce, only to be interrupted by his current wife of 21 years, Anita Greenidge.
According to reports, Greenidge was preparing to marry a woman of Vendor’s Arcade, at a South Sophia church and was forced to call it off after learning that his wife, Anita Greenidge, was on to him.
Both Greenidge and his wife reside overseas.
He came to Guyana from the United States on Thursday and is scheduled to return on Monday night. Reports state he obtained a certificate from the Registrar General’s Office by using the name Deryck Giles.
He had reportedly procured a decree absolute in the name of Deryck Giles and it was this that he presented to obtain a marriage certificate.
Anita Greenidge got wind of this and flew to Guyana where she notified the authorities who promptly halted the proposed wedding. The couple was therefore left to celebrate a reception.
The wife said that when she returns on Monday she is going to take up the matter with the US authorities since she was the one who sponsored her husband.
