Baha’is in Guyana, and around the world are observing the Festival of Ridvan, which commemorates the anniversary of Baha’u’llah’s declaration, in 1863, that he was the manifestation of God, and the Promised One of all earlier religions.
This declaration signified the beginning of the Baha’i Faith.
The Festival of Ridvan began from sunset on April 20, to sunset on May 2, every year. The first, ninth and twelfth days of Ridvan are major Baha’i holy days on which work is suspended.
The observance of the Festival of Ridvan usually sees gatherings for prayer and celebration. During the Ridvan Festival, most Baha’i elections are held. Various Spiritual Assemblies are elected to govern the affairs of the Bahá’i Faith.
Since the Baha’i Faith has no clergy, these assemblies carry out some of the responsibilities of clergy, as well as some responsibilities that an elected Board of Deacons or Parish Council of a Christian church might perform.
At the local level, there are Local Spiritual Assemblies, while at a national level there is a National Spiritual Assembly. Yesterday, the Baha’is of Guyana elected their National Spiritual Assembly.
Local spiritual assemblies are elected on the first day of Ridvan each year.
The national conventions at which national spiritual assemblies are elected each year are usually held later in Ridvan, as is the international convention usually held every five years to elect the Universal House of Justice, the governing body of the Baha’i Faith.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
