Guyana will share in a US$13 million allocation by a seven-member regional grouping named the Bolivarian Alternative for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA-TCP).
At a two-day forum that ended in Venezuela yesterday, the grouping in a joint communiqué, said that the money will go toward developing 10 agricultural projects, one of which is being undertaken in Guyana.
The other projects are being pursued in Honduras, Suriname, Jamaica, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Nicaragua and Belize. The money represents part of a contribution to help in the recovery from the Global Economic crisis.
The Bolivarian Alternative for the Peoples of Our America, a grouping comprising six of the states of Latin America, and St Vincent and the Grenadines, contend that the solution to the global economic crisis does not rest with “exclusive groups such as G-20”.
In the communiqué issued, yesterday, at the end of the two-day summit in Venezuela, the grouping ALBA-TCP, stated that the developed world, through its economies, and as a result of the prompting of their governments are responsible for the “origin and depth” of the crisis.
The group, with Venezuela at the forefront, said that it is ready to cooperate “in solidarity and in search of solutions. These solutions take into account the special and differential treatment deserved by the most vulnerable of the developing countries.
Most stunning was the decision to blame “capitalist production and consumption model” for the environmental degradation leading to natural disasters.
“They gave instructions to the ALBA-TCP Ministerial Council, through the respective agencies, to create ALBA International Brigade of Humanitarian Aid”.
The regional grouping has also agreed to allocate US$5 million toward the literacy programme in Haiti, while the Caribbean region will also receive US$9.3 million for an Agricultural Development Project.
Venezuela’s launching of a communication satellite dubbed the Simon Bolivar Satellite has been seen as a move that will help advance regional integration. “(It) represents a fundamental tool to take initiatives with a social impact on the ALBA peoples.” These social programmes should come into force next year.
