A new champion will be crowned come Sunday when the 2nd annual Cheddi Jagan memorial 50-mile cycle road race comes off on the Essequibo Coast.
Defending champion Junior Niles, like many of his fellow countrymen (Alonzo Greaves, Geron Williams, Christopher Holder among others), has left for Trinidad and Tobago where they will compete in the West Indies versus the Rest of the World Championships set for this weekend in the Twin Island Republic.
Niles won last year’s event in 2 hours 18 minutes 56.42 seconds. Geron Williams had won the junior category; Dexter Wilson took the upright division while Virgil Jones was the top veteran.
Sunday’s race will pedal off from Supernaam at 09:00hrs proceed to Charity and return to Anna Regina for the finish where the first 6 riders to cross the finish line will be rewarded, eight prime prizes will also be up for grabs during the course of the race.
Veterans and upright cyclists will pedal off from Anna Regina proceed to Charity to finish at their starting point.
The first three juniors, veterans and upright riders will also win prizes. A special prize is at stake for the first over-60 competitor to finish the race. The race is sponsored by El Dorado Trading and Suresh Jagmohan.
Transportation for riders and officials will leave the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport, Main Street at 05:00hrs on Sunday morning for Parika.
