Led by the competition’s highest goal scorer, Mervin Squires (9), Grove turned back the challenge of Craig 3-0 to lift the champion’s trophy, Squires netting a double.
The win for Grove secured their unbeaten record in the competition which commenced last November but was curtailed like many other tournaments, due to the rain.
Claiming the third place in emphatic style was Samatta Point who hammered Bagotstown 7-2, Jamal Europe blasting in six of the winners goals with the other tucked in by Alvin Isaacs. Romel Rowley and Jamal Johnson scored Bagotstown’s consolations goals.
Shane Singh was the other scorer for Grove who controlled the game against Craig to establish themselves as the top under-13 side on the East Bank.
Managing Director of Guyana Beverage Inc., sponsors of the tournament under their Fruta brand, Robert Selman, was on hand to meet the teams before the commencement of the matches and expressed his delight at the sport being played at this level on the East Bank.
Selman noted he was pleased to see the sport making a return in the Association and encouraged the Executive to work even harder to bring off competitions at other levels so that the youths can be gainfully occupied.
President and Secretary of the East Bank Football association, Wayne Francois and Phillip Fraser both expressed their gratitude to the sponsor for their commitment towards the tournament.
Craig’s Shaquelle Evans gained the nod for the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, while Grove’s captain Lloyd Matthews was named the best goalkeeper. The individual winners were each presented with trophies.
Members of the winning team received one haversack and 6 exercise books each compliments of the Guyana Beverage, the championship trophy and one ball while each member of the runner-up side collected 6 exercise books each. (Franklin Wilson)
