Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday remanded two Muslim teachers attached at the Central Islamic Organization of Guyana to prison.
Abdul Rahman Panawala, 36, on April 3, having entered Guyana on Wednesday November 26, 2008 and granted permission to stay until November 29, that year, failed to comply with the condition. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
His colleague Appar Seddqui 45 entered Guyana on August 8, 2005 and was permited to stay until August 31, 2005. He also failed to comply with the condition. He pleaded not guilty.
They were both represented by attorney at law Nigel Hughes who told the court that both defendants were invited to Guyana as teachers at the request of the Central Islamic Organization of Guyana.
Hughes said that the men are attached with the Diamond Masjid and that they also live in the compound with their families.
The lawyer said that each year the CIOG applies for its clients’ extensions and they are granted stay in the country, adding that the latest was in 2008.
He said that both clients were given work permits by the Guyana Revenue Authority, adding that they have contributed to the country.
Hughes said that it unfortunate that the Ministry of Home Affairs does not look at these applications speedily.
The lawyer said that there are presently applications at the Ministry for the two defendants. The lawyer said that Seddqui after been in Guyana since 2005, has filed for naturalized status.
Hughes said that the Ministry has acknowledged his application and has asked the Guyana Revenue Authority to send a letter informing them of his contribution to Guyana since has been here.
Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith did not oppose bail but told the court that even if the applications are pending they should have updated their passports. Bail was denied and the defendants are to return to court today.
