In wake of the recent stabbing to death of 39-year-old Pamela Beverly Mangru of New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop, the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R) is now questioning the reason for the Domestic Violence Act of 1996.
This Act which was passed in the Parliament of Guyana, the ‘Stamp It Out’ programme, which was mounted by the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, and other relevant programmes and legislations do not seem to have an impact on the rise of domestic violence in Guyana, the party said. The party condemns in no uncertain terms, the brutal killing of the woman.
“We wish to extend our heartfelt sympathy to her children and the rest of her family. Her death is a tragedy in itself but even more disturbing is that it will have an adverse impact on the rest of her family as her four children will now have to be brought up without a mother.”
In a press statement to the media, the party stated that Mangru’s death is yet further graphic evidence that domestic violence is reaching epidemic proportions in Guyana, as she joins the growing list of women who have been brutally killed by a partner or spouse.
The party also supports the proposal by Eusi Kwayana that a Commission of Inquiry be established to look into the question of abused women and to make recommendations as to how it can be effectively tackled.
“Such a commission should make a close examination of the root socio-economic causes of domestic violence in order to arrive at a better understanding as to why it disfigures Guyanese society at this particular point in its history.”
Domestic violence does not only have a negative impact on children but ultimately renders the family unit dysfunctional. It also prevents the family unit from carrying out its role of being a source of nurturing and the incubator of values so necessary for the survival of societies, according to the PNCR.
“If only for these reasons it is necessary for Guyana to do its best to protect its mothers, its daughters and its sons. End domestic violence now,” the party said.
