Almost one year after laying Guyana’s first president Arthur Chung to rest, the nation is today gearing to afford a state funeral to Guyana’s first female president, Janet Jagan, who died on Saturday last at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. She was 88.
At the time of her death, Mrs. Jagan was the serving President of the women’s arm of the People’s Progressive Party, the Women’s Progressive Organisation. She was also actively involved in the national Arts Gallery at Castellani House.
In March 1997, when her husband, President Cheddi Jagan died, she became the country’s first woman Prime Minister and First Vice-President.
On December 19,1997, she was sworn in as President and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, when the PPP won the elections – the first woman to hold that office in Guyana.
She resigned due to ill health in 1999 but remained a key figure in the party.
On the occasion of the state funeral, several roads in the city will be closed to vehicular traffic to facilitate the procession between 06:00hrs and noon.
It is anticipated that there will be some inconvenience to traffic along the route as the procession moves from Georgetown to Babu John, Port Mourant, Corentyne.
Before the state funeral at Public Buildings, the hearse, accompanied by the family, will move off from Mrs. Jagan’s Residence, New Haven, Bel Air, at 08:00 hrs proceeding west then north onto the Railway Embankment Road thence into Sheriff Street, turning into Campbell Avenue/Sandy Babb Street, then turning south onto Vlissengen Road.
The cortege will stop on Vlissengen Road directly in front of the Office of the President and Castellani House where the military procession will commence. The procession will proceed south and turn west into Brickdam on to Parliament Buildings, arriving at 08:30hrs for the State Ceremony.
The cortege departs Parliament Buildings at 10:00hrs and will stop briefly in front of the headquarters of the People’s Progressive Party, Freedom House, Robb Street, for a ceremonial farewell.
The procession will then leave Georgetown for Babu John, Corentyne where speeches and the final military honours will be performed. It is anticipated that the final ceremony and the cremation will commence at 14:00hrs.
