Berbice High School (BHS) were crowned the 2009 inter-school female football champions when the Hearts of Oak Masters Football club held the first ever female inter-secondary school football competition for schools in the New Amsterdam/Canje area.
The one day competition was played on Friday last at the All Saints Scots Church ground, at Princess Elizabeth road in New Amsterdam.
In the final, Berbice High School got the better of Tutorial Academy Secondary School (TASS). The game was evenly contested as both team exhibited a lot of skills and physical fitness. It took sudden death penalty kicks to determine the winner after the game ended 0-0 after full and extra time. After the first set of penalty kicks the score read 3-3 all.
Four other schools participated in the competition; New Amsterdam Multilateral (NAMS), Berbice Educational Institute (BEI), Canje Secondary School (CSS) and Vryman’s Erven Secondary Schools (VESS).
At the end of the competition the winners and other outstanding participants were presented with trophies and incentives.
Those receiving accolades were Berbice High School with winner’s trophy, Tutorial Academy runner-up trophy, while individual prizes of a trophy each went to Jonel Steele of NAMS for being the best goalkeeper on show, the best defender and best midfielder and best striker prizes went to Dinellie Daphness, Radica Hazel and Roxanna Rigby all of BHS.
A medal for the most promising player went to Ann Fraser of TASS.
The coordinator was former national player Neil Grizzly Humphrey. The club also donated a Basketball to the respective schools, while Humphrey thanked the schools for participating and encouraged the students to keep training and be of good discipline if they need to go far in the sport.
He also told them to stay in school and take in their education, because education is the key to success.
