A policeman stationed on the East Coast of Demerara sustained a broken right leg and lacerations to several parts of his body when he collided with a horse while riding his motor scooter along the LBI Estate Access Road early Saturday morning.
Detective Corporal Paul Wintz, who is attached to the Turkeyen Police Station, was left lying on the roadway for several hours as a result of the accident before he was picked up and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Wintz told this newspaper that he was heading home at around 03:00 hours when he encountered several wild horses that usually gather on the roadway.
Wintz said that he managed to avoid slamming into the first horse that he encountered but collided with another, who was aroused by the incessant honking of his horn.
“When I see them, I was already right up under them,” he said.
He said that he fell unto the parapet of the road and remained there until daybreak when persons going to work spotted him.
Wintz was picked up in a semi-conscious condition and taken to the hospital where his entire right foot was placed in a cast.
He was later sent home.
Motorists have for some time been bemoaning the presence of wild horses on the East Coast Demerara roadways, which in most cases, are devoid of street lights.
This newspaper understands that a man who lives in the Chateau Margot area owns the horses.
However, prosecution against the man appears to be difficult since the horses carry no brand.
