Pele and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) were in destructive mode on Friday evening when the 2nd annual Banks Premium Beer Cup continued at the Tucville ground.
Both teams dismantled the challenge of their respective opponents by 8-0 margins. Pele with a brace each from Captain Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant, Marvin Joseph and Calvin Shepherd along with one each from Okeene Fraser and Gerald Whittington destroyed Beacon in the feature clash.
In opening play, GDF were too hot for Houston Stars to handle and as it turned out, it was target practice for the Army boys.
Striker Stellon David was in vintage form by banging in a helmet trick (44, 45, 78, 85), Olvis Mitchell netted a double (75 & 80) with one apiece from Warren Gilkes (38) and Sherlock Dowden who opened the scoring in the 17th minute.
Defending champions Pele has sent out an ominous warning to all and sundry that they mean serious business in taking back the title of the top knock-out artist in the city.
But while Pele might be buzzing with confidence in this regard, the other serious contenders including the GDF are also showing that they also have what it takes to earn this title.
Pele showed great ball weaving skills in demolishing Beacon in a game which saw rain pouring down for almost the entire second half.
The yellow and blue boys scored at liberty and regularly. Calvin Shepherd was on target in the 7th and 61st, Marvin Joseph 17th and 45th, Travis Grant 63rd and 82nd. Okeene Fraser added his name to the scoring list in the 56th and Gerald Whittington closed the deal in the 75th minute.
A whopping 39 goals have been scored in the first 8 matches of the competition, eight teams walking the plank all of them being division one teams save BK International Western Tigers who have qualified for the Premier League ranks once again.
Santos, who will campaign in the division one ranks this season, has proved that they are still a force to reckon with when they upstaged Flamingo, who is the second team that qualified for the Premier League.
Well the show has just begun and fans can prepare themselves for what will be unleashed in the quarter-finals which kick off this evening with two potentially explosive matches.
Georgetown Football Club, who hammered Black Pearl 7-0 in their first game, will take on Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United in the first match up.
Alpha, fine tuning preparations for their CFU Champions Cup return game against Haiti’s Tempete FC took care of UG 5-0. So far it has been a showcase of who can score more goals which the fans have been enjoying so at this stage where teams are beginning to focus more on the big carrot, it is expected to be no different.
The main battle this evening features Fruta Conquerors, 5-0 winners over Thomas United, battling Uprising, carrying the title as giant killers with their 1-0 win over the Tigers. Kick off time is 18:00hrs.
