Police on East Coast Demerara have detained a 72-year-old male remigrant who went on a chopping spree early yesterday morning, wounding three persons, including a physically challenged girl.
The man, who shared the house at Lot 81 Side Line Dam, Bachelor’s Adventure, with the victim, went berserk at about 03:00 hours forcing at least two of the victims to flee by scaling a 10-foot high fence to seek refuge at a neighbour.
Natasha Cusbert, the man’s 33-year-old lover, suffered lacerations to her neck and back, 17-year-old Mishana was chopped on her right hand and 13-year old Tiffany Cusbert was wounded on her nose and back.
A release from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation stated that Natasha and Mishana Cusbert were treated and sent away while Tiffany Cusbert was admitted to the ward.
A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, told this newspaper that he was awakened by loud screaming coming from the house the suspect shared with the females.
“All I hear is murder, murder, murder. One of the (women) ran into my house. She told me that the man was trying to kill them,” the neighbour told Kaieteur News.
He said that he came out of his house and helped two other women to jump a fence that separated his yard from the one in which the incident was taking place.
However, one of the victims was still trapped in the house but no one was brave enough to go in to rescue her.
A few minutes later the police who were summoned arrived on the scene and eventually took control of the situation.
“They brought the other girl out and put her in the police vehicle,” the neighbour stated. It has not been revealed what caused the incident but residents in the community indicated that the re-migrant had been trying to get his lover and her relatives out of the house for some time. He has not yet given a statement to investigators claiming that he would do so in the presence of an attorney.
Police say that he is likely to remain in custody until it is ascertained that the hospitalised victim is out of danger. Yesterday’s incident mirrors one that occurred at Mahaica, on Monday, when a man attacked his reputed wife, her sister and mother with a piece of wood, causing them to be hospitalised.
A three-month-old baby also suffered in that attack and is at present, in the intensive care unit, having sustained a fractured skull.
The suspect is still on the run.
