A bandit who was armed with a toy gun and robbed a Chinese restaurant on D’Urban Street ended up in the Brickdam lock-ups and must now await his day in court, thanks to the prompt response of ranks on a police mobile patrol.
The man and his accomplice, who managed to escape, had robbed the Yong Ming Chinese restaurant at around 14:30 hours yesterday.
According to reports, the two men entered the restaurant and, after eating a meal, held up the female proprietor.
The perpetrators, who were both armed with what at the time appeared to be handguns, took away $120,000 from a drawer and ran out of the establishment.
But they did not cater for the presence of the police patrol that was passing through the area at the time.
Eyewitnesses said that the suspect in custody scaled several fences with the ranks hot on his trail in his bid to escape.
Realising that he could not bluff the police with his weapon, the suspect soon abandoned his escape bid and was lucky to be turned in without a scratch.
One rank told this newspaper that when the suspect realized that he had nowhere to go, he quickly dropped the toy weapon he was carrying, apparently fearful that if he was seen with it in his hand, the outcome could have been vastly different.
To the surprise of the police rank who retrieved the weapon, it turned out that what was believed to be a .32 pistol was in fact made of plastic.
Apart from the toy, which will be used as evidence against the suspect, the police also recovered a quantity of cash.
And again quick response by the police on Wednesday led to the recovery of a stolen bicycle and other articles and to the arrest of a suspect at Lancaster, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara.
The police had responded to a report of attempted burglary on the home of Carol December of Lancaster and the larceny of a bicycle that was on her premises at about 01:50 on the day in question.
The burglars escaped after they were seen by neighbours who raised an alarm.
However, ranks of a mobile patrol that responded later observed motor car HB 2204 parked at Mahaica with two men inside.
On approaching the vehicle one of the men exited and escaped but the other was arrested.
The stolen bicycle was retrieved from the vehicle along with four knives, five sealing machines, a quantity of smoked fish, two water coolers, one gallon paint and a quantity of plastic bags, which were later found to have been stolen from a fish processing plant in the Mahaica.
