A pedestrian, Motiram Persaud, who was attempting to cross the road in Oleander Gardens, East Coast Demerara, was struck down by an east bound passing car at approximately 12:30 hours yesterday.
According to bystanders, Persaud stepped off of the median that divided the two carriageways and was struck by the vehicle. The driver of the car, Andrew Williams, said that the pedestrian just stepped off of the median and into oncoming traffic, without warning. According to reports, Williams was not speeding, and was driving in the right lane of the road.
“If you see how that man just jumped off of that thing (median) and come on the road,” said a bystander.
Upon impact, the 44-year-old victim was thrown some distance. The police arrived on the scene soon after and took the body to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where Persaud was pronounced dead on arrival.
The police ranks also took Williams into custody.
Upon investigation, it was ascertained that Persaud, who does odd jobs wherever he can, usually sleeps in the vicinity of a bar, somewhere on Lamaha Street. He reportedly sometimes ‘takes walks’ up the East Coast.
