The Alleyne’s AME Zion Church, in collaboration with other churches in the Mid-Atlantic One Episcopal District (MAOED), will convene for a conference, which gets underway at the Church’s Regent Street, Georgetown Headquarters and culminates on Sunday at the same venue.
The conference will herald the 94th Session of the Guyana/Suriname Annual Conference where Pastors will make presentations on the stewardship for the preceding year.
Bishop Louis Hunter Sr., who succeeded Bishop Milton Alexander Williams, who died while serving in that position, will be the presiding official. Bishop Hunter previously served as Administrative Bishop over the Tennessee and Indiana conferences in the United States.
The conference is an annual occasion that allows Pastors from the MAOED to present annual reports of their stewardship for the conference year.
Guyana is grouped among the MAOED countries, which include Allegheny, Ohio, New Jersey, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago.
Each territory convenes at different times of the year for the conference and Bishop Williams functions as the oversight person accompanied by his wife, Ingrid Flack-Hunter, who oversees the activities of the women’s arm. Senior Presiding Elder, Gordon Hamlet is responsible for organizing local activities with support from his junior colleague, Dexter Sansculotte.
Activities get underway tomorrow morning with a Welcome Service to be followed by a Holy Communion Service and a business session. Shortly afterwards, on that very day, the presiding elders from the churches of the two districts, while pursuing a broader development agenda.”
He pointed to several other critical actions that the Region must adopt in order to meet its sustainable development objectives.
These include exploring renewable energy technologies such as wind, solar, geothermal and hydro-electric power as a mitigation strategy to counter both the effects of climate change and the global economic crisis.
The Prime Central and East/West Demerara/Linden and Suriname, will present reports of the year’s activities followed by the Pastors’ report.
Activities continue on Friday with the Female Missionary Report and climax with a candlelight service. On Saturday, the Church will hold a youth rally where the young people will get an opportunity to exhibit their leadership skills. A young preacher from the USA has been identified to be the guest speaker. Mr. Hamlet also disclosed that Ordination of Pastors would be done on Saturday. However, he could not verify the number of Pastors to be ordained since this is done after the presiding Bishop scrutinizes, and subsequently endorses the list. The Bishop is also guided by recommendations from the respective churches.
The curtains will come down on the church’s activities on Sunday with a divine worship service where Bishop Hunter will deliver the message, at the end of which the Pastors would be appointed to serve in the various jurisdictions for the imminent conference year.
Several dignitaries have been invited to participate in the activities. Among them are Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, who is currently performing the duties of the Head of State; Leader of the Opposition, Robert Corbin; Ambassador of the United States, John Jones; as well as the Head of the Guyana Council of Churches.
