A midday brawl between students of two community high schools in the Charlestown area yesterday left one teenager with a split ear.
The police were called in to quell what appeared to be a gang war between students of the Carmel and Dolphin Community High Schools.
Several students from both schools were taken into custody for questioning into the incident, which took place during the lunch time break.
This newspaper understands that students from both schools, armed with pieces of wood, confronted each other outside the Carmel Community High School on Smyth Street.
The two institutions, which are situated no more than two blocks from each other, have a history of violent confrontations.
One of the students from the Dolphin Community High School told this newspaper that a gang from Carmel confronted one of his colleagues and took away his personal belongings.
It was when the students from the Dolphin Community High School went to Carmel to retrieve the items that a vicious school yard brawl ensued.
“They just come up to he and ask he if he is ‘Blood’, a reference to the gang known as the Bloods. Then they take away he thing. We now go fuh get back de things and was just share lash,” the student related.
The brawl could have been worse had it not been for a passing police patrol unit that intervened.
However, no arrests were immediately made as the students scattered in different directions.
The brawl attracted several passersby who stopped and stared in amazement at what was taking place.
Even teachers at the Carmel Community School could not contain the actions.
When this newspaper arrived on the scene initially, the police were seen talking to a student of the Dolphin Community High School, whose clothing was covered with blood.
The matter appeared to have been settled and everyone dispersed.
However, a few hours later the police were seen emerging from the Dolphin Community High School with a number of schoolboys who they placed into their vehicle, which sped away, much to the amazement of onlookers.
This newspaper understands that students from the Carmel Community High School were also arrested.
Residents in the community told this newspaper that a feud between the students of the two schools has been going on for quite sometime and it was no surprise that yesterday’s brawl occurred.
It is not yet clear if any charges will be laid.
